Brochure Folding Equations

Designing pieces that fold can be tricky since the panels need to be different sizes to accommodate for the folds. Listed below are the equations to figure panel sizes for nine of the most common folds for both text weight and cover weight stock.

3 Panel Trifold

Text Weight:
Panels 1 & 2 = .0625 ÷ 3
Panel 3 = Panel 1 – .0625

Cover Weight:
Panels 1 & 2 = .125 ÷ 3
Panel 3 = Panel 1 – .125

 

3 Panel Z-Fold

Panels 1, 2 & 3 = x ÷ 3

 

3 Panel Gate Fold

Panels 2 & 3 = (x÷ 4) + .03125
Panels 1 & 4 = (x÷ 4) – .03125

Cover Weight:
Panels 2 & 3 = (x÷ 4) + .0625
